Hôtel Mayan Mittoz. Just the best if you want no frills tropical paradise.
This is the place to stay if you visit Holbox if you like a small tropical paradise. Holbox is a great place in Mexico with locals who still believe in welcoming tourists rather than ripping them off. The Mayan Mittoz is very much no frills; you need to take your own travel kettle if you want a cup of coffee in your room. But don’t let that put you off. Jas, pronounced Has, behind the bar will look after you while you’re there. Beer, tacos, cocktails , you name it he’ll sort it. Just by the port it’s maybe a hundred yards from where the ferry comes in. Humming birds in the bush outside our room, myna birds everywhere, frigate birds overhead. Even saw an iguana sunning itself outside reception!
An easy walk downtown to a myriad of restaurants. There are two sorts of restaurants in Holbox, tourist restaurants and restaurants for the locals. If you like Mexican food you want the second type. They’re also perhaps half the price with really welcoming staff and absolutely great food. My favourite was Taco Makieras - down past the square and then off to the right. Then there’s Las Panchas if you’re into fish but the portions there are enormous. Don’t be embarrassed to share though. The Mexicans do. Locally caught fish dish for 280 pesos if way enough for two! And no bones, just delish fish, rice and salad! Go soon cos it’ll go the same way as Isla Muheres in no time.

A disappointing experience
I arrived to Mayan Mittoz around 7pm after a 10 hour flight, a 2 hr drive and a 30 minute ferry ride. No one at a ramshackled reception. The website shows very nice pictures and the reviews are ok so I really was fine with choosing this hotel. Eventually I located a gardener who contacted the manager and gave me a key to room number 10. The small hotel was unmanned other than gardening staff and cleaning staff in the day. There is a small cafe/restaurant that is open from 8am til 4pm. This person speaks English and I was able to communicate with him. The room was quite a nice size but dull and dark. The dark grey curtains had to be closed as maintenance or cleaning staff were walking past. The bed was comfy and the room was relatively clean but totally bare. The bathroom was not good. The shower was shabby and the floor was wooden. The rain head shower was grubby and on my return it did actually break. I did find a maintenance man to change it. I cannot imagine the germs harbouring there. The toilet seat was not secure to the toilet and the toilet pan was stained and the fixings were rusty on the hand sink. The outside space was pleasing to the eye with the flora and fauna very nice with humming birds and iguanas. The sun beds were shabby and the pool itself looked nice but there were tiles missing and the air filter covers were missing. I don’t think it was totally clean. The patio doors were broken apparently they had come off their rollers so you could not open them and were not locked. the patio seating area was overgrown so not really possible to sit on it. It’s next to the ferry and a 10 minute walk to town but the area is not particularly pleasant. It is fairly noisy but that did not bother me. I did not feel intimidated at all. Was safe. I think for the time I was there I was the only person !!! Staying there for 10 nights and after 3 nights I moved hotels as it would have seriously affected my Holbox experience. I did relay all of these problems back to the manager via the restaurant / cafe person but when I returned on the last night nothing had changed. I have also informed my tour operator and awaiting their response. Unfortunately I would not recommend this 4* hotel to anyone who has stayed in 4* properties. This is not even worthy of a star ! Probably ok to stay for a night ! If not fussy

Good hotel near the ferry
Our stay at the Mayan Mittoz hotel in Holbox was ultimately positive thanks to Suzana, who was exceptional with us because she was not the first person to receive us.
We did not receive any previous messages to confirm the hotel address, which caused us to travel to the other side of the island, when in fact it is very close to the ferry.
The first room we were assigned had a strong sewer smell, very unpleasant. The person who received us at the time seemed uninterested and quite ungainly in his work, which made the first impression even worse.
Fortunately, we met Suzana who was attentive, professional and always watching over us. She quickly changed rooms and, thanks to her kindness and dedication, our experience improved completely.
It really showed how important staff are in a hotel and how they can transform a stay.
The hotel has a very convenient location, close to the ferry and excursions departure point.
The hotel has aspects to improve in the management of arrival, but thanks to Suzana, our stay was very pleasant. No doubt people like her make all the difference.

Proximity to the ferry is ideal. You will see perfect sunrises right from the pool through the main doors. Super friendly owners and young couple running the taco stand on-site. Around the corner is golf cart rental and you easily walk the few blocks into the heart of town where all the shops and restaurants are. Beach is about 5-7 mins away. Though this side of the island is quieter, it is not quiet. The taxi golf carts seems to rev their engines from early morning to late night and the rooms really have no sound proofing. The pool area is lovely!

The hotel is very well located, good service and very clean.
Although the island is a paradisiacal place, it is very dirty, since there is no drainage service, it smells very bad in some places. The rental of golf carts to get around, very expensive...!!!!
They offer you a visit to see the luminescences, however it was not what we expected.
The gastronomic offer, more or less, the access to the beaches is closed by the hotels.
It is worth knowing but only for one night.
